How To Create and Sell Online Courses?
Selling online courses is an excellent way to make money while you sleep! But there are many things to consider before getting that polished course ready for students. Here below, I’ve listed some of the most common aspects that you should not forget before creating an online course. In my more throughout article, I will show you how to create and sell online courses step-by-step.
So whether you’re just getting started or ready to take your business up a notch, keep reading for all the details.
1. Pick a Topic for Your Online Course
It’s important to pick a topic that you’re passionate about. That way, you’ll be able to create content that is both engaging and informative. Fortunately, there are a variety of topics that you can choose from when creating an online course. If you’re interested in business, you could create a course on how to start a business or how to market your products. If you’re interested in cooking, you could create a course on how to make delicious meals with minimal effort. The possibilities are endless!
When selecting a topic for your online course, it’s important to keep your target audience in mind. If you’re targeting business owners, your course should be geared towards teaching them specific skills or strategies. If you’re targeting home cooks, your course should be focused on teaching them new recipes or cooking techniques.
Of course, the best way to determine which topic is right for you is to see what other online course creators are already selling. This can give you firsthand advice on what works and what doesn’t when creating an online course.
2. Choose the Right Tools
Teaching Environment
It is important to create a teaching environment that is both comfortable and professional. One way to do this is by arranging your teaching space in a way that encourages communication and collaboration. Make sure your teaching space is well-lit and comfortable. This will help students feel at ease and less likely to be distracted.
Computer
When choosing a computer for online teaching, there are a few things to consider. The most important thing is processing power, if you plan on using multimedia in your lessons, you’ll need a computer that can handle it. Otherwise, you’ll run into frustrating lag times and choppy audio and video. The storage space is also important because you’re going to be uploading lots of files. You’ll need a computer with a lot of fast hard drive space. Alternatively, you can also use cloud storage which I recommend using as a backup.
Camera
When it comes to finding the best camera for online teaching, there are five main options: DSLR camera, webcam, smartphone (not recommended), computer’s built-in camera (not recommended), and screen capturing. The best option for you depends on a few key factors, such as convenience, portability, and price.
USB webcams are becoming more and more popular due to their low price and convenience. They’re perfect for online courses because they’re easy to use and very portable. If you want the best possible quality in a low-light environment, then a DSLR camera is the way to go. However, they can be a bit bulky and difficult to transport. Smartphones are not recommended for online course creators because they have low performance in low-light environments. Computer’s built-in cameras are also not recommended because they usually have low image quality.
Screen capturing is a good alternative to using a camera. It’s easy to use and doesn’t require any special equipment. You can simply use your computer’s built-in webcam or an external webcam to capture your screen. This is a good option if you want to record your entire screen or if you have a limited budget.
Headphones
It’s important to consider the quality of your audio. Poor audio quality can be a distraction for your students and can affect their learning experience.
When choosing headphones, it’s important to consider sound quality and comfort. Noise-canceling features can also be helpful in blocking out distractions. Wireless headphones are a great option if you need to move around while teaching.
High-quality headphones can be expensive, but they are worth the investment. With $150 you can get studio-quality headphones that will provide clear sound and help you create better audio recordings for your courses.
Video Editing Software
If you want your videos to look professional and polished, you need good video editing software. This type of software lets you quickly add text, graphics, and music to your videos. You can also edit out any accidentally captured footage or wrong takes. Having this type of software saves you time in the long run and engages your students’ attention more than if your videos look rushed or unfinished.
A variety of video editing software platforms are available for online teachers. Some widely used programs are Adobe Premiere Pro, Final Cut Pro, and Sony Vegas. It’s crucial to select the one that will work optimally for your particular course since each program has unique advantages and disadvantages.
Studio Lighting
As an online course creator, it’s important to understand the basics of lighting in order to create well-lit and professional-looking courses. The three-point lighting system is a popular setup for video studios, and it can be used to achieve great results in a home studio setting as well.
The key light is the main source of light in the setup, and it should be placed approximately 45 degrees to the side of and slightly above the subject. The fill light should be placed opposite the key light and should be less bright than the key light. The backlight should be placed behind the subject, and it should be much brighter than the fill light.
Experiment with different positions and intensities for each light until you find a setup that works best for your course content. With a little bit of experimentation, you can create well-lit courses that look great online!
Internet Connection
A reliable internet connection of at least 10 Mbps download and 2 Mbps upload is required for online teaching, so be sure to choose an internet plan with a minimum speed of 100 Mbps. With the right setup, you can ensure a smooth and successful class for both you and your students.
Backup
It’s important to make sure your videos are backed up in multiple places. If your computer breaks or someone steals your device, you could lose hours of work.
One option is to use external storage to duplicate your files. Another is to use a cloud storage service like DropBox or Google Drive. Either way, make sure the files are at least in two places.
If you’re using an online course platform like Thinkific, you can also upload your videos to their server. This way, you’ll have a third backup for your videos.
3. Price Your Online Course
There are a few different factors to consider when pricing your course. You’ll need to think about the cost of producing the course, how much you need to recoup in order to make a profit, and what the market will bear.
You’ll also want to take into account the competition. If there are other courses out there that are similar to yours, you’ll need to price your course accordingly. You’ll need to decide what format (video, audio, or text) you’d like to offer your course.
All of these factors can influence the price of your course. So before setting a price, research and ensure you’re charging what your online course is worth.
4. Find a Platform
You have two main platforms to choose from when it comes to selling your courses: a dedicated online course platform or an online course marketplace.
A dedicated online course platform, like Thinkific, is a site where instructors create and sell their courses. They handle all the logistics of hosting and selling the courses, and students purchase and take the courses directly through the platform. This can be a good option if you want more control over your course sales and marketing.
An online course marketplace, like Skillshare, is a site where instructors and students can find each other. Instructors create courses and put them up for sale, and students browse and purchase courses from the marketplace. This can be a good option if you want to reach a wider audience of potential students.
5. Create a Landing Page
Creating a landing page for your course is a critical step in marketing it. Your landing page allows potential students to learn more about your course and how it can help them achieve their goals.
It’s also important to make your landing page look professional and attractive. Use clean fonts and graphics, and make sure all of the information is easy to read. You may also want to consider hiring a professional web designer to create a custom landing page for you.
6. How to Market an Online Course (16 Quick Tips)
If you go per my suggestion and start with an online course platform instead of a marketplace, the marketing must be made by you. 7. Build a Community
Build a community with your students. One way to communicate with students is through email. You can create a course-specific email address and send out weekly or bi-weekly updates. This will keep students informed of what’s going on in the course and remind them of upcoming deadlines.
Another way to communicate with students is through a course forum or discussion board. Many online course platforms include these kinds of features in their paid plans. This can be a great way to get feedback from students and answer any questions they may have. It also allows students to connect with each other and discuss the course material.
You can also use social media (Facebook groups mainly) to communicate with students. This is a great way to share updates, links to resources, and even polls or quizzes. It’s also a great way for students to connect with each other outside of the course.
